Our Trinitarian Confession of Faith:
We confess that Yahweh, the one true God who reveals himself in the Holy Bible, eternally exists as three distinct, equal, fully divine persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit – and these three persons perfectly and indivisibly share one divine being. Thus, Yahweh is one God in three persons – a Holy Trinity.
Review Point 1: “Trinity” is a theological term with a biblical basis.
• God is one.
• The one God is also three divine persons: the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.
• The Church adopted helpful theological terminology:
○ Ousia – This word means “substance” or “essence.” It refers to the aspects of divinity that the Father, Son, and Spirit share. Today, it is most commonly expressed as “being.”
○ Hypostases – This word means “that which stands beneath,” referring to the underlying reality of a thing. Today, it is most commonly expressed as “persons.”
• Yahweh is one ousia in three hypostases, or one being in three persons.
Review Point 2: The OT hints at Yahweh’s plurality.
Review Point 3: The NT reveals the identity and divinity of the Son.
Review Point 4: The Gospel is the work of the Trinity.
