“Judge Not?”
Matthew 7:1-5
The common (but incorrect) understanding of Matt 7:1:
Christ’s command to ‘judge not’ means Christians can never make moral assessments of ungodly behavior or call people who are engaging in sin to repent.
The contextual, correct understanding of Matt 7:1:
Christians can make reasonable, rational, and biblical judgments regarding immoral behavior and false teaching. However, we must do so compassionately and fairly, with love as our aim, and, most importantly, without hypocrisy.
Point 1: Godly discernment requires judgment.
Point 2: Jesus warns us against judgment without mercy.
Point 3: Jesus warns us about the danger of hypocrisy.
