Summary of the problem: Due to their pagan backgrounds, many Corinthian believers began to place greater spiritual importance on certain displays of the Holy Spirit’s power, particularly the gift of tongues. As a result, they undervalued other spiritual gifts that were just as vital to the health of the church, though far less dramatic or outwardly impressive.
Point 1: The Holy Spirit is a gift.
Point 2: The Holy Spirit gives gifts.
Three categories of spiritual gifts:
Sign gifts – Visible, undeniable demonstrations of miracles.
Enabling gifts – Gifts to equip believers with spiritual perception and
insight, allowing them to understand, apply, and respond rightly to God’s truth and will.
Teaching gifts – Gifts given to individuals to build up and support the body of Christ, providing them with teaching and leadership so the church may function as God intended.
Point 3: False gods give false gifts.
Three things to remember about false signs:
1. Sometimes they are fake.
2. Sometimes they are genuine.
3. Signs can captivate believers and unbelievers alike.
