How the Passover Became the Lord’s Supper
In Jesus’ day, the traditional Passover ceremony followed a traditional pattern:
1. The first cup of wine: the cup of sanctification.
2. The eating of bitter herbs.
3. A narration of the Exodus story.
4. A second cup of wine: the cup of deliverance.
5. The benediction of unleavened bread.
6. The eating of the roasted lamb.
7. The third cup of wine: the cup of redemption.
8. Scripture recitation.
9. The fourth and final cup: the cup of praise.
10. Singing of Hallel Psalms (Ps 113-118).
